There are moments when a single conversation shifts your perspective, forcing you to look at what’s happening around you with a fresh, unfiltered lens. That moment for me was when a doctor shared something that isn’t often acknowledged—the severe strain on Trinidad and Tobago’s healthcare system during this time of year. The influx of emergencies, the financial burden, the exhaustion of medical staff—it’s a side of Carnival that goes unnoticed, buried beneath the glamour and glorification of the season.

And as I listened, I started connecting the dots, seeing how this period—already unstable with election fever brewing—ushers in not just celebration, but consequences. And yet, amid all of this, another moment looms: Ramadan. A time where, despite our own unpreparedness, we find hope.

The Return of a Dear Friend

It feels like just yesterday we bid farewell to Ramadan, like parting with a dear friend, unsure of when we’d meet again. Now, that friend is returning, and though its arrival brings a sense of unease—of not being ready, of not having prepared enough—it also brings an undeniable opportunity. A moment where we can invite Allah’s mercy into a nation that desperately needs it.

A Season of Political and Social Instability

But the weight of this season is undeniable. It’s an election year, and tensions are high. Instability grips the air as promises of change and whispers of uncertainty battle for space in people’s minds. And yet, at the same time, the revelry of Carnival takes center stage—a season wrapped in indulgence, vulgarity, and a staggering economic cost. Every year, we are told that Carnival brings in tourism, foreign exchange, and economic activity. But what about the whole picture?

The Unseen Cost of Carnival

I passed an accident today—another wreck on the road, another casualty of reckless celebrations. I didn’t need to hear the details to know how the story went. Drunken drivers, poor decisions, lives shattered in seconds. A doctor told me about the overflowing emergency rooms, the stress on hospitals stretched beyond their limits.

Nine months from now, we’ll see another consequence—the rise in births, teenage pregnancies, and the stories of regret and irreversible change. The financial and social burden left behind is real, yet ignored in the conversations about Carnival’s so-called “benefits.”

Is This Really Worth It?

Sometimes, this isn’t just about morality—it’s about practicality. The financial strain this period places on our country is immense, yet it is never included in the balance sheet when discussing its economic value. The medical care, the government assistance required in the aftermath, the resources drained—it is a weight our nation carries, whether we acknowledge it or not. And the worst part? Few seem to be asking if this is truly worth it.

Ramadan: A Different Perspective

As a Muslim, the contrast feels even sharper. While one part of the country prepares for a month of self-restraint, another is immersed in a season of immorality. And while I feel personally unprepared for Ramadan, there is also a strange sense of comfort in knowing that it comes at this exact moment.

Because Ramadan is not just about fasting—it’s about resetting, about seeing the world through a different lens, one not clouded by distractions. It is a reminder that in the middle of disorder, peace can still be found.

Are We Asking the Right Questions?

This is what we should all be asking right now. Not just whether Carnival is bringing in money, but whether it is bringing in good. Not just whether it is fun, but whether it is right for a country already struggling under the weight of economic hardship, crime, and instability.

It is easy to focus on the excitement of the season, to be blinded by the noise, but what happens when the music stops? What remains after the revelry is over?

A Chance for Reflection and Change

Ramadan offers an alternative perspective—one that doesn’t glorify destruction or excess, but instead calls for reflection, responsibility, and betterment. It is a month where we are given a rare opportunity to pull ourselves away from the illusions of the world and reconnect with what truly matters.

It teaches us to weigh our actions carefully, to see beyond the moment, and to consider the long-term impact of our choices.

A Nation at a Crossroads

So, as I reflect on everything unfolding around us—the elections, the chaos of Carnival, the burden on our healthcare, the moral and financial toll on our nation—I realize that the discomfort I feel is necessary.

Because when something doesn’t sit right, it is often a sign that something must change. And as Ramadan approaches, I hold onto the hope that this can be a time where we begin that change.

We may not all share the same beliefs, but surely we can agree on this: a country cannot prosper when it celebrates what ultimately destroys it.

And perhaps, this is the moment to ask ourselves—are we glorifying the right things? Are we investing in what truly builds our nation? Or have we, as a people, been sold an illusion?

Ramadan reminds us that change is possible, that mercy is near, and that even in the midst of instability, there is always a way to return to what is right.

And maybe, just maybe, this is the time to start re-evaluating—not just as individuals, but as a nation.

It’s Not Just About Passports

Trinidad and Tobago – So there we were, fresh from the spiritual heights of Umrah, only to land back home and be greeted with our names booming by announcements: “Abraar Alli, (and two other names called) —step forward!”

It felt like a game show, but instead of prizes, we got a front-row escort through immigration and a polite grilling from customs officers bypassing about 200 curious onlookers. While the officers were professional and cordial (no complaints there as I genuinely thought I was a VIP, maybe I am!), the whole scene was a reminder of a much bigger issue—why does it so often feel like Muslims are being singled out?

A Pattern That’s No Laughing Matter

Jokes aside, this incident is part of a troubling trend. Muslims in around the world are increasingly finding themselves on the receiving end of extra “attention” in public spaces, workplaces, and yes, even at the airport. These moments might seem isolated, but together, they paint a concerning picture of systemic Islamophobia. It’s something we can’t ignore, and we all need to work towards creating a society where everyone, regardless of faith, feels treated equally.

When people are unjustly singled out based on their faith or appearance, the repercussions go beyond the immediate moment. For traders, entrepreneurs, and professionals, these experiences erode confidence in the systems that should protect fairness and impartiality.

The perception that Muslims are disproportionately targeted by officials or other institutions fosters a climate of distrust and hesitancy in engaging with trade and business activities.

How Bias Impacts Trade

1. Hindrance to Business Travel: Frequent questioning and targeted scrutiny discourage individuals from pursuing international opportunities. Entrepreneurs and traders, essential to fostering economic growth, may avoid certain markets altogether due to fear of harassment.

2. Perception of Vulnerability: When a group feels that systemic biases target them, it undermines their ability to engage in trade confidently. Perceptions of unfair treatment ripple across communities, affecting partnerships and collaborations. Furthermore, such incidents don’t just end with personal discomfort; they cast a shadow on the victim's professional and business relationships. Traders, clients, or collaborators may begin to perceive the victim as a liability, suspecting that there might be an underlying issue. Even if no wrongdoing exists, the mere doubt raised by these experiences can be enough to make business partners hesitant to engage, undermining trust and damaging professional reputations. This ripple effect goes beyond individuals, affecting entire networks and communities in the process

3. Global Ramifications: Trinidad and Tobago, as a trading nation, thrives on trust and reputation. When such biases are perceived in our systems, it tarnishes our image internationally and creates barriers for our entrepreneurs to engage with foreign investors or partners.

Trust in Allah and Advocacy for Justice

As Muslims, we firmly place our trust in Allah. We believe that sustenance, success, and opportunities are in His hands. However, our faith also calls us to act against injustice and challenge biases that perpetuate harm. Trust in Allah is not passive; it is active reliance coupled with effort.

The injustices that govern society, whether in customs, law enforcement, or workplaces, must be addressed head-on. Biases create divides where bridges are needed. As a nation that prides itself on its diversity and unity, we must work collectively to ensure fairness and equity in every sphere, including trade.

A Call to Action

To rebuild confidence and eliminate barriers, the following steps are necessary:

• Transparency in Processes: Officials and institutions must adopt transparent, unbiased methods of operation.

• Sensitization and Training: Agencies need regular education on cultural and religious diversity to prevent discriminatory behaviour.

• Equal Opportunity in Trade: The government must create an environment where every individual feels empowered to engage in economic activities without fear of bias or harassment.

As I reflect on my recent experience, I am reminded of the words of the Quran:

This verse is a powerful reminder of the responsibility we all share—to uphold justice and fairness in every aspect of our lives. While we trust Allah for our provisions, we also have a duty to ensure that the systems governing us reflect the values of equity and dignity that define us as a people.

Let us commit to building a society where trust is not just placed in Allah but is also mirrored in the systems that serve us. Only then can we achieve true progress and prosperity for all.

If your business isn't working, at least one of these three elements isn't right. It really is that simple.

But simple isn't the same as easy. Each element involves countless variables - some within your control, many that aren't. Market conditions change, competition evolves, and customer preferences shift.

Let's break down each element and look at some practical ways to get them working in your business.

1. A Profitable Product/Service

What Does "Profitable" Really Mean?

Your product or service needs to make more money than it costs to create and deliver - and not by a small margin. You need enough profit to pay yourself, reinvest in growth, and build a sustainable business.

The Revenue Trap

Here's a common scene: A business is bringing in thousands in revenue, but the owner can barely pay themselves. Why? Because revenue isn't profit.

A £10,000/month business making 5% profit (£500) is worth less than a £5,000/month business making 40% profit (£2,000).

The Components of Profitability

Your revenue (money in) needs to pay for a lot of things, including:

• Direct costs (materials, labour, delivery, etc.)

• Overheads (premises, software, equipment, etc.)

• Marketing and sales costs

• Your time (yes, you should factor this in!)

• Future business growth

• Taxes!

Where Businesses Go Wrong

The biggest profitability killers are:

• Underpricing ("I'll make it up in volume!")

• Underestimating costs (especially overheads - the little things add up quickly)

• Taking on customers that cost more than they're worth

• Not tracking the right numbers

Know Your Numbers

True profitability means understanding your core metrics:

• Track every cost, no matter how small

• Know exactly what it costs to acquire each customer

• Monitor profit margins on each product/service

• Review and adjust your pricing regularly based on real data

The Early Days

Most businesses need time to become profitable as they build momentum, fine-tune their offer, and grow their customer base. This is why keeping your day job initially can be a smart move - it gives you breathing room to grow your business and become truly profitable without the pressure of needing it to pay all your bills immediately.

Just don't fall into the trap of using your salary to subsidise an unprofitable business model forever. If your business isn't profitable on paper, adding more time or money won't fix the underlying issue.

2. Enough People Who Want It, Can Afford It, and Will Pay Your Price

The Market Reality Check

Having a profitable product is only half the battle. You need enough people who:

• Have the problem your product solves

• Have the means to pay for it

• Are willing to pay your price

Size Matters

Your market needs to be large enough to support your business goals. A small, high-end market can work if your margins are healthy. A larger, lower-margin market can work if you can reach enough customers efficiently. But a small market with low margins? That's a recipe for disaster.

Common Market Assessment Mistakes

• Assuming everyone is your customer

• Overestimating how many people will pay your price

• Confusing "interest" with "willingness to pay"

Understanding Your Market

Successful businesses know:

• Exactly who the ideal customers are

• What these customers currently pay for similar solutions and are willing to pay for yours

• What makes them choose one solution over another

Setting Yourself Up for Success

Focus on finding the sweet spot where:

1. Your product is profitable

2. Customers see clear value in your solution

3. Your price aligns with what they're willing and able to pay

4. The total market size can support your business goals

Remember: "Interested" customers who don't buy are just window shoppers. Build your business around people who not only want what you offer but are also ready and able to pay for it.

The Marketing Challenge

Even with a profitable product and a viable market, your business won't succeed unless you can:

• Find your potential customers

• Cut through the noise to get their attention

• Convince them that your solution is worth buying

Finding Your Customers

Your potential customers are out there, but where? They might be:

• Searching online for solutions

• Following specific social media accounts

• Members of certain communities

• Reading particular publications

• Shopping in specific places

• Working in particular industries

The key is to identify these locations and focus your efforts where your customers actually are, not where you want them to be.

Getting Attention

In today's noisy world, getting attention means:

• Being where they are when they're ready to listen

• Having a clear, compelling message

• Speaking directly to your customer's needs

• Standing out from competitors

• Staying consistent with your marketing efforts

Converting to Sales

Getting attention isn't enough - you need to turn interest into sales:

• Make it easy for customers to understand your offer

• Remove barriers to purchase

• Handle objections effectively

• Guide customers through the buying process

• Build trust and credibility

Finding What Works

Success in marketing and sales usually means:

• Testing different approaches

• Measuring what works (and what doesn't)

• Focusing on methods that are cost-effective

• Building systems you can repeat and scale

• Continuously improving your process

Know Your Customers

Take time to create detailed customer personas. Go beyond basic demographics and understand:

• Their goals and aspirations

• Their daily challenges and frustrations

• What motivates their buying decisions

• Where and how they like to be communicated with

• What they truly value

This deep understanding helps you create marketing that resonates and brings real value to your customers' lives. Don't rush this step - it's the foundation of effective marketing.

Remember: Marketing isn't about taking a scatter-gun approach and trying everything simultaneously - it's about experimenting to find what works for your business and doubling down on it.

Putting the Pieces Together

To build a successful business, you need:

1. A profitable product/service

2. Enough people who want it, can afford it, and will pay your price

3. To find your these people, get their attention, and help them make a buying decision

If your business isn't performing as well as you'd like, one of these elements needs work. The good news? Once you identify which one, you can focus your efforts on fixing it.

But even with all these elements in place, there's one more crucial ingredient for success: barakah. Without Allah's blessing, no business will ever be successful, even if it makes billions in profit every year, because true success is about a lot more than just money.

Almir Colan teaches and advises on Islamic finance, economy, and management. He is the founder of Muslim Money Matters, an adviser to several Islamic finance institutions, and a member of a working group at AAOIFI (Accounting and Auditing Organization for Islamic Financial Institutions). Previously, Almir was a consultant lecturer for the Master of Islamic Banking and Finance course at La Trobe University.

“Social media” seems to be the thing most of the entrepreneurs in my circle want to focus on, and for good reason: social media can help you get your message across to a massive amount of people for relatively little financial outlay.

However, there are other ways of growing your customer base – and they’re well worth considering.

The 19 Traction Channels

There’s a great book entitled “Traction: How Any Startup Can Achieve Explosive Customer Growth”, where the authors Gabriel Weinburg and Justin Mares list nineteen “channels” (ways) that can help a startup gain “traction” (users/customers).

Imagine we’re setting up a dentist’s practice called “The Whole Tooth” (cool name, isn’t it?!).

Let's sink our teeth into how we might be able to use each of the 19 “traction channels” to get more clients.

(N.B. This isn’t the order that they appear in the book)

1. Existing Platforms

What it is: Leveraging existing websites or apps where your potential customers already are (e.g. social media platforms).

How we could use it: Set up a Facebook page for “The Whole Tooth”.

2. Content Marketing

What it is: Creating and sharing free valuable content to attract and retain customers.

How we could use it: Create and post short dental hygiene tips videos on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok.

3. Social and Display Ads

What it is: Paid advertisements on social media platforms or other websites.

How we could use it: Run a paid campaign on Facebook and Instagram ads to target local residents, showcasing before-and-after photos of our cosmetic dentistry work.

4. Community Building

What it is: Creating and nurturing a community around your brand.

How we could use it: Start a Facebook group where members can share their experiences and questions, with our dentists offering expert advice. Because it’s our community, we get to (occasionally) pitch our services!

5. Viral Marketing

What it is: Encouraging your current users to refer others to your business.

How we could use it: Implement a "Refer a Friend" programme where existing patients receive a free check-up when they refer a new patient to us.

6. Search Engine Marketing (SEM)

What it is: Paying for ads on search engines like Google.

How we could use it: Run a Google Ads campaign so that whenever someone searches for “best dentist London”, they see our ad.

(Next time you search for something on Google, look out for the “sponsored” search results at the top of the page – that’s SEM in action!)

7. Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)

What it is: Optimising your website to rank higher in search engine results (these are the results that are not ‘sponsored’).

How we could use it: Create informative blog posts about dental health topics (optimising the content to include key search terms) and ensure that our website makes Google happy (it loads quickly, is structured properly, etc.).

8. Targeting Blogs*

What it is: Getting your business featured on blogs* relevant to your industry.

How we could use it: Reach out to health and wellness bloggers to offer guest posts about dental health or to be featured in their "local business spotlight" sections.

(*Although the book highlights “bloggers”, I find it easier to think about “influencers” instead.)

9. Email Marketing

What it is: Building a list of email subscribers and sending them regular communications.

How we could use it: Send monthly newsletters with dental care tips, practice updates, and special offers for teeth cleaning or check-ups.

10. Engineering as Marketing

What it is: Building tools or resources that attract potential customers.

How we could use it: Build a tool on our website that allows users to upload a photo of their smile and see a simulation of how they might look with different braces or aligners.

11. Affiliate Programmes

What it is: Paying others a commission for referring customers to you.

How we could use it: Set up an affiliate programme with local beauty salons, who can earn money by referring their clients to us.

12. Business Development

What it is: Forming strategic, mutually beneficial partnerships with other businesses.

How we could use it: Partner with local gyms to offer their members discounted dental treatments (it’s an extra perk that the gyms can offer).

13. Offline Ads

What it is: Traditional advertising methods like TV, radio, billboards, etc.

How we could use it: Place ads in local newspapers and bus stops in high-traffic areas.

14. Public Relations (PR)

What it is: Attracting (normal) attention from media outlets and influencers.

How we could use it: Write press releases about new, state-of-the-art equipment we’re using or innovative treatments we're offering. Reach out to local health and lifestyle magazines for feature articles.

15. Unconventional PR

What it is: Generating buzz through stunts, contests, or unusual events.

How we could use it: Host a "Best Smile in London" contest, with the winner getting an awesome prize plus a generous donation to the charity of their choice.

16. Sales

What it is: Directly reaching out to potential customers to make sales.

How we could use it: Have a team member call local businesses to offer corporate dental plans for their employees.

17. Trade Shows

What it is: Attending industry events to showcase your business.

How we could use it: Set up a booth at local health fairs or wellness expos to offer free dental consultations and showcase our services.

18. Offline Events

What it is: Hosting your own events to attract potential customers.

How we could use it: Host a "Dental Health Awareness Day" in a local park, offering free basic check-ups and dental health advice.

19. Speaking Engagements

What it is: Giving talks or presentations to raise your profile and attract customers.

How we could use it: Offer to give presentations about dental health at local schools or community centres.

Which Channel Should You Choose?

Should you pick just one channel, and if so, which one? Or perhaps you should pick more than one? Or maybe try all of them?! (Don’t do that)

The channel(s) you choose will depend on various factors, including your industry, target audience, budget, expertise, etc.

I’ve learned the hard way that finding the right channel(s) is a process - one that needs to be part of a strategic, well-crafted marketing strategy.

We try to create the perfect plan because we are afraid of what might happen if we take action and things go wrong. We worry about what might happen if we ‘fail’.

So, we try to analyse every possible scenario and mitigate against every possible risk.

But there are so many variables that we get bogged down - and end up doing nothing. "Perfection is the enemy of progress", as the saying goes.

It's natural to worry about what might go wrong, and a bit of proactive risk management is healthy.

But it's important to put things into context. Ask yourself, "If this goes wrong, what actually happens?"

It probably wouldn't be the end of the world (or even your business)!

It's also important to be balanced. So, be fair and also ask yourself, "What happens if this goes *right*?”

Entrepreneurship is all about seeing opportunities and taking risks - and most of the time, we don't have much of a plan at all...

Reed Hastings (co-founder and former CEO of Netflix) brilliantly compares starting a company to jumping off a cliff and assembling a plane on the way down!

Start getting comfortable with taking action - despite the risks.

The very name Tijarah - derived from the Arabic root “tajr” - is often translated as ‘trade’, but it represents much more than this.

Understanding Tijarah: More Than Just Trade

Tijarah reflects the dynamic exchange and interaction that lies at the heart of both commerce and life itself.

In Islam, tijarah carries a profound significance, symbolising the pursuit of both worldly and spiritual success through ethical business practices.

Tijarah has two significant meanings:

1) Devotion to Allah: The first meaning is related to a person's relationship with Allah.

A Muslim who follows the commands of Allah, performing acts of worship (such as prayers, fasting, and zakat), is engaged in Tijarah with Allah. This is considered the most successful form of trade, as the believer is "trading" their good deeds for the reward of paradise.

The Qur’an repeatedly describes this as the best form of Tijarah, encouraging Muslims to view their worship as a trade with their Creator.

2) Business Between Humans: The second meaning of Tijarah refers to business activities between people.

In this context, Tijarah encompasses all forms of buying, selling, leasing, and other economic activities. This aspect of Tijarah must adhere to the values of justice, fairness, and mutual consent, as detailed in the Qur’an and the Sunnah.

Tijarah in the Quran and Sunnah

In the Quran, tijarah is often mentioned alongside guidance for living a balanced life.

One verse that beautifully captures this balance is:

This verse emphasises that while devotion to Allah is paramount, Muslims are also encouraged to actively engage in trade and seek lawful sustenance.

Islam does not separate faith from our daily endeavours, especially in business. Rather, it integrates the two, turning business into a form of worship when done ethically.

Entrepreneurship is not just about profit - it's about purpose. The linguistic roots of tijarah remind us that business is not a static transaction; it is a dynamic, ethical journey, one that reflects our deeper spiritual responsibility.

Just as trade involves the movement of goods and services, so too does it represent the movement towards personal and societal betterment, all under the guidance of Islamic values.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ: The Ultimate Example of Tijarah

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was not only a spiritual leader but also a successful trader, renowned for his honesty, trustworthiness, and fairness in business. His title Al-Amin (The Trustworthy) was earned through his impeccable trade dealings.

The Prophet ﷺ once said, “The trustworthy merchant will be with the prophets, the truthful, and the martyrs” (Tirmidhi). This powerful statement links the act of trading with the highest forms of spiritual reward, showing that business done right can elevate a person in both this life and the Hereafter.

Tijarah - when practised with integrity- brings not only profits but also divine purpose. Our goal is to emulate the Prophet’s ﷺ ethics in business, ensuring that our ventures contribute to both our financial stability and spiritual growth.
